WIN AR holds team meeting to kick-off 4-year extension

To kick-off the 4-year extension of WAN-IFRA’s Women In News (WIN) programme in the Arab region, the WIN AR team convened for their annual strategic planning meeting, which took place in Cairo, Egypt between 27 and 29 January, 2020.

The esteemed WIN MENA Steering Committee members Jumana Ghuneimat from Jordan, Dalal Saoud from Lebanon, and Ehab El Zelaky from Egypt joined the three-day meeting to discuss the program’s activities throughout the upcoming year. The meeting was also attended by WIN MENA Director Fatemah Farag, Programme Manager Myra Abdallah, WIN’s coaches Fatma Kheir, and Mahmoud Atout, as well as trainers Lamia Radi, and Mona Magdy Abdelmaksoud, and country co-ordinators Samar Haddadin, and Tamer Al Mahdi.

“Women In News is one of the most important initiatives working to support women journalists, and strengthen their skills to get into more managerial positions,” said Steering Committee member, and Executive Editor-in-Chief of Al Masry Al Youm, Ehab El Zelaky. “I am very happy to be part of this effort that reflects positively on the Arab media landscape,” he added.

Over the course of the three days, the team cemented the programme’s commitment to work with women journalists, and media organisations in the region to overcome the gender gap in management and senior management positions. WIN’s flagship leadership development Accelerator will be launching its call for applications soon to welcome more high potential women journalists for Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine to its cohort. “A major strength of WIN is in the ability of the program to articulate and reflect the requirements of its local partners through the high level engagement of its local members,” commented WIN AR Regional Director Fatemah Farag, “The meetings of key regional WIN actors is an important part of making sure the program continues to be aligned with regional industry requirements, trends and attitudes.”

WIN will also be expanding its Advisory programme, which delivers bespoke, in-house advice and training services on key operational and management issues to help media improve their gender balance track record and achieve operational excellence.

Women in News is currently active in 15 countries throughout Africa, the Arab Region and Southeast Asia. The initiative partners with the news media industry to increase the leadership and voices of women in news through capacity building, in-house advisory services and global advocacy.
