Women In News has signed agreements with tertiary institutions, which will enable the programme’s participants to carry out mentoring sessions with aspiring female journalists on their campuses.
So far Memorandum of Understanding agreements have been signed with University of Zambia, University of Rwanda, ICK Rwanda with two more expected in Zimbabwe and Botswana.
WIN Africa Director, Tikhala Chibwana, stated that although the process has taken long, getting universities to sign agreements with WIN is a show of confidence in the programme and what it seeks to achieve. Getting universities to sign MoUs is a lengthy process and takes time but we are excited that we have a couple in the bag and ready to roll, he said.
Carole Phiri co-ordinator from the University of Zambia agreed that the focus on encouraging young women to pursue journalism careers is both timely and commendable. I am equally excited for our students who stand to benefit lot from this programme.
The WIN Future Leaders Initiative is a basic component of the WIN programme aimed at mentoring of up and coming female journalists so as to smoothen their entry into the industry and begin to build their staying power.
The aim is that the interface with experienced women in the media will also provide Future Leaders with insights and encouragement, where they can learn more about careers in the media and have their questions answered.
The WINners, as the participants of the WIN programme are fondly called, are all geared up to share what they know with future leaders and University of Rwanda will be the first to get a taste on 13 th February, 2018.
