At last week’s World News Media Congress in Portugal, two unacceptable incidents of sexism took place on stage during the gala dinner, highlighting what women in media, and indeed society, have to deal with all too often. The Board of the World Editors Forum responded. Here is the Board's statement in full.

"At last week’s World News Media Congress in Portugal, two unacceptable incidents of sexism took place on stage during the gala dinner, highlighting what women in media, and indeed society, have to deal with all too often.

The Board of the World Editors Forum joins the WAN-IFRA Presidency and management in condemning the behaviour and pledges to ensure it never happens again.

We will continue to speak out for meaningful transformation, and call out abuse and support diversity programmes, particularly through direct support of WAN-IFRA’s outstanding and ground-breaking Women in News initiative.

We call on all editors to join voices with the World Editors Forum against sexism and discrimination.

We urge editors to act within their own newsrooms and organisations to ensure women are treated equally and fairly and provide active support when incidents occur."
